Best Fitness Trackers for Swimming (2026): Waterproof Picks
Swimming is one of the best all-round, low-impact workouts there is — but it’s easy to lose count of your lengths. A swim-capable tracker fixes that, counting laps, detecting strokes and logging metrics like SWOLF so you can actually see yourself improve. The key is choosing one that’s properly rated for the pool and built to track swimming, not just survive a splash.
Below are our 2026 picks, all rated for swimming, plus a plain-English guide to water-resistance ratings and the swim metrics worth watching.
Quick Picks
Best overall: Apple Watch Series 10
Strong pool + open-water tracking and a huge app ecosystem (iPhone).
Best swim data: Garmin Venu 3
Detailed stroke detection, SWOLF and long battery, on any phone.
Best value: Fitbit Charge 6
Swim-proof to 50m with basic lap tracking, slim and affordable.
How we chose
We don’t lab-test every device. The picks
Apple Watch Series 10 — Best overall
Water-resistant to 50m, the Series 10 handles both pool and open-water swims, auto-detects sets and strokes, and pairs with apps like MySwimPro for structured training. For iPhone users it’s the most capable swim watch that’s also a full smartwatch. Battery means it’s less suited to all-day open-water marathons.
Apple Watch Series 10 (GPS, 46mm)
- ✓Excellent pool and open-water tracking
- ✓Huge swim/training app support
- ✓Full smartwatch features
- ✓Accurate metrics
- ✕iPhone only
- ✕~18–24h battery
Garmin Venu 3 — Best for swim data
Garmin’s swim tracking is the most detailed here: automatic stroke detection, lengths, pace, SWOLF and rest timers, with multi-day battery so you’re not charging before every session. Works with iPhone and Android. The best pick if you want to analyse and improve your technique.
Garmin Venu 3 (45mm)
- ✓Detailed, accurate swim metrics
- ✓SWOLF and drill/rest support
- ✓Long battery life
- ✓Works with iPhone and Android
- ✕Pool-focused (check open-water needs)
- ✕Premium price
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 — Best for Android
Water-resistant to 5 ATM, the Galaxy Watch 7 tracks pool swims with automatic stroke and lap detection and a full health suite, integrating tightly with Android. Most features are limited on iPhone, so it’s an Android pick.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 (44mm)
- ✓Solid swim tracking for Android users
- ✓Bright AMOLED display
- ✓Comprehensive health features
- ✓Wide app support
- ✕Limited on iPhone
- ✕~1.5-day battery
Fitbit Charge 6 — Best value
Swim-proof to 50m, the Charge 6 handles basic lap and duration tracking in a slim, affordable band with ~7-day battery. It won’t match Garmin’s depth of swim metrics, but for counting lengths and general fitness it’s the best value choice.
Fitbit Charge 6
- ✓Affordable and swim-proof
- ✓Slim, light on the wrist
- ✓Good all-round fitness tracking
- ✓Works with iPhone and Android
- ✕Basic swim metrics (no SWOLF)
- ✕Small screen
For serious or competitive swimmers, a dedicated Garmin Swim 2 or a Garmin Forerunner adds open-water GPS and richer pool tools — worth a look if swimming is your main sport.

Water resistance: what the ratings mean
Officially, no watch is “waterproof” — only water resistant to a tested depth. Two ratings matter:
ATM (atmospheres). 1 ATM ≈ 10 metres of static pressure. A rating of 5 ATM (50m) is the practical minimum for swimming, and all our picks meet it. Lower ratings (3 ATM) are fine for rain and handwashing but not laps.
IP rating. The two digits cover dust (first) and water (second) — e.g. IP68 means dust-tight and protected against sustained submersion. ATM is the more relevant number for swimmers.
A note: these are static-pressure tests in ideal conditions, so avoid hot tubs and high-speed/diving impacts unless the maker specifically allows it.
Swim metrics worth tracking
- Laps / lengths & distance — the basics; never lose count again.
- Stroke detection — automatically logs freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly.
- SWOLF — “swim golf”: strokes per length plus seconds per length. Lower is more efficient — track it per stroke over time to see technique improve.
- Pace & rest — set drills with rest intervals on Garmin and similar.
One honest caveat: wrist heart rate is unreliable underwater on every brand — water disrupts the optical sensor. For accurate swim HR, use a compatible chest strap that stores data for later sync.
FAQs
What water-resistance rating do I need for swimming?
At least 5 ATM (50m). That covers pool and general swimming. A 3 ATM rating is only good for splashes and rain, not laps. All our picks are rated for swimming.
What is the best swimming tracker in 2026?
The Apple Watch Series 10 is the best all-round swim watch for iPhone users; the Garmin Venu 3 gives the most detailed swim metrics (SWOLF, stroke detection) on any phone; and the Fitbit Charge 6 is the best value for basic lap tracking.
Can fitness trackers measure heart rate while swimming?
Not reliably from the wrist — water interferes with optical heart-rate sensors. For accurate swim heart rate, pair a compatible chest strap that records and syncs afterwards.
What is SWOLF?
SWOLF ("swim golf") adds your strokes per length to your seconds per length. A lower score means more efficient swimming, so tracking it over time is a great way to measure technique improvement.
